Ingredients
Step 1 — Cook the pasta
- 1 lb spaghetti
- Salted water (for boiling)
Step 2 — Make the meat sauce
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 medium onion (diced)
- 3 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 can (24 oz) crushed tomatoes
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tsp Italian seasoning
- ½ tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp olive oil
Step 3 — Serve
- Parmesan cheese (grated)
- Fresh basil (optional)

Cook the pasta
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook spaghetti according to package directions until al dente. Reserve ½ cup pasta water before draining.

Make the meat sauce
Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Cook onion 3–4 minutes until soft. Add ground beef and cook, breaking it up, until browned. Add garlic and cook 1 minute. Stir in tomato paste, then add crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer 10–15 minutes.

Serve
Toss drained spaghetti with the sauce. Serve topped with grated Parmesan and fresh basil.
